First Day of Summer Update

A fun ride at Round River Trails!  The rain stopped just as we unloaded our ATVs at the Stompin’ Grounds for the second club ride of the year. There was no dust, and lots of shallow puddles. We rode the winding, rocky trails on the east and west side of 64. We played a few hands of poker and passed out Gift Cards to Stompin’ Grounds, Lucettes Pizza, and the Char House restaurant. And Woodrow the Woodtick, our club’s new mascot, made its first public appearance!

Woodticks attend NOHVCC Great Trails Workshop -- Dave Shaw and Dave Halsey went to the 3-day workshop, held by the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (an educational nonprofit), in conjunction with the MN DNR. 40 people attended, from 6 ATV and dirt bike clubs, Hubbard County, and the DNR, including trail technicians and its “roving crew” that builds ATV trails across the state. It was one day in a classroom learning how to plan, design, build and maintain OHV trails, and two days in the field, looking at ways to improve the single-track and ATV trails at the Martineau/Round River Trail Systems north of Akeley. Attendees also got to watch trail dozers in action, building a new trail section, and going into the woods in groups to plan and flag a trail using what they learned at the Workshop. Dick Dufourd, one of the best OHV trail designers in the country led the Workshop. He is also the author of the new 350-page “Great Trails” book now being used by OHV clubs, state DNRs, the USFS and BLM, to build trails that are fun for riders, and environmentally sustainable.

A big thank-you to Taren Saccoman for making the Woodtick costume. To see more of Taren’s artistic talents in mosaics, sewing and jewelry, visit her Facebook page: T-sac Creations.
